I've paid for all of my travel this way over the last 5 years, granted that's only like 8 plane tickets, but free is free. I hate having multiple credit cards open at once, gives me too much anxiety!
Then I let the now $0 just hang out or I close it if there will be a yearly fee. I usually keep this up until I read about a better credit card and start the process of switching over to a new one. I treat the credit card as my debit card. Otherwise, I would set up auto payments for the credit card. I check all of my accounts almost daily so I make the credit card payments essentially right after a bill goes through. Then, I switch all of my autopay bills to the credit card. I've found it helps to wait with this most of the time they will offer you more points. Then, there is always a bonus to add a card/user, so I put my husband on as an authorized user. Every time I have a big purchase coming up I research the best sign up offers, because there is always a spending minimum and open the card and make my large purchases. I don't get extreme about it with constantly opening cards. I don't have a lifestyle that allows for a ton of travel right now but, as I was settling down I started doing this a little bit. I once read a blog post where someone said they pay as much as they can through their credit card and pay it off at the end of the month as if it were their bills, and it hit me like a ton of bricks how easy that is! Tl dr: Only do it if you are disciplined, have big expenses coming up, and don't mind the time/effort of making sure it's worth it. Sometimes, I can even find cheaper deals on travel sites instead of using the credit card portal.Ĭash it out? Travel points? Meh, I hate feeling 'restricted' and feeling obligated to use it every year for 'that lavish vacation' before I cancel the credit card after one year. I've signed up for most of the 'popular' ones (mostly Chase first because their requirement are strict) where I would do it every 2-3 years.īut I've stopped doing it entirely now since the churning game is just not worth it to me anymore. However, I always paid it off as soon as I receive the statement, so I would recommend this only if you can pay it off every month in cash and have discipline.
